Chin surgery augmentation or reduction, also called mentoplasty, is a procedure done to alter the appearance of the chin, either making a receding chin more prominent or reducing an over-aggressive chin.

Chin reduction

A large, prominent or jutting chin can cause the face or smile to look less proportional. A chin reduction procedure removes or shaves bone to correct this. The procedure is designed to bring about facial harmony by bringing the chin and jawline into better balance with the other features.

What happens during a chin reduction procedure?

During this procedure, a jutting or over-prominent chin is corrected by removing or shaving down part of the bone tissue that makes up the shape of the chin.

As a first step, you will have a full consultation with Dr. Heil. He will analyze your face and chin, hear your concerns and goals, discuss procedure in detail, and take pictures to plan your surgery.

After all the incisions are made, the surgeon is able to sculpt or redistribute the fat and underlying tissue in the face and neck. Skin is then redraped over new contours and held in place with sutures. The last part of the process is simply trimming away the excess skin.

The tip of the chin will then be resecured with metal wires and plates. If necessary, a silicone implant may be placed to smooth out sharp contours. After this is complete, the incision will be sutured closed.

Chin augmentation

A chin augmentation is designed to correct a receding chin or otherwise weak-looking chin. Sometimes bone from the jaw itself can be moved forward. In many cases, specially-shaped silicone implants can be used to give more projection to the chin.

What to expect during a chin augmentation implant procedure

During this procedure, an implant is inserted to correct a weak or receding chin. Before the surgery, you and Dr. Heil will discuss your chin implant options. The implant is available in various different shapes and sizes, allowing custom fitting to the configurations of your face.

Once you’re under anesthesia, the Dr. Heil will make an incision either inside your mouth along the bottom lip or underneath the chin itself. He will gently stretch the tissue to create a space where the implant can be inserted. This implant is made of silicone and feels very much like the tissue you would usually feel around the chin.

Once the implant is in place, Dr. Heil will close the incision.

Who is a good candidate for a chin augmentation or reduction?

Chin surgery is for men and women with realistic expectations who want to change their appearance by correcting a weak or overly-prominent chin. You may be a good chin surgery candidate if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You are a nonsmoker
  • You are bothered by the size or jut of your chin
  • You have a receding or weak chin
