What To Expect When You Get a Hair Transplant

Today’s hair transplants use your natural hair to provide incredible results. If you are looking for the best hair treatment for hair loss in Pittsburgh, then here is everything that you need to know about modern hair transplants.

FUT and FUE: Two Common Methods for Harvesting Healthy Hair Follicles

Ultimately, the goal of a hair transplant is to harvest healthy hair follicles from the back of the head (the “donor area”) and move them to “recipient sites” in the scalp’s thinning areas.

In Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), this is done by removing a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head, closing the area with sutures, and extracting hair follicles from that strip. FUT leaves a long, linear scar that is hidden by longer hairstyles.

In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), on the other hand, the physician extracts individual hair follicles one-by-one from the back of the head. This method does not leave a linear scar, but the patient’s hair must be trimmed short prior to the procedure. At Premier Plastic Surgery, we offer two FUE-based procedures: NeoGraft and ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration.

NeoGraft: Handheld FUE

The NeoGraft device speeds up the process of traditional FUE. This handheld device uses air pressure and suction to extract hair follicles from the scalp. Since NeoGraft hair transplants are done entirely by hand, they are dependent on the physician’s skill level. Additionally, the surgeon’s hands may fatigue during this two to four-hour procedure, potentially leading to lower quality grafts with less impressive results.

ARTAS™: Robotic Hair Restoration

ARTAS™ is a state-of-the-art robotic assistant that dissects hair follicles from the donor area and makes recipient sites in thinning areas of the scalp. Its highly specialized computer program uses artificial intelligence algorithms, a high-definition stereoscopic vision system, and other advanced technology to provide the best possible results. Ultimately, however, the surgeon is in complete control of its actions.

ARTAS™ automatically maps out each hair follicle in the donor area, assessing its angle, density, direction, and quality. Then, it will select donor hairs based on parameters set by the physician. All of the extractions are uniformly spaced, so it is almost impossible to tell where the donor hairs came from after the donor area has healed. The ARTAS™ robot can perform up to 1,000 grafts per hour, more quickly and more precisely than the human hand.
