The Ultimate Guide to ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration
ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration is the most advanced hair transplant for men available in Pittsburgh and across the nation. This technique uses your natural hair to create permanent and natural-looking results. Unlike other procedures, ARTAS™ doesn’t leave a noticeable scar, require weeks of downtime, or damage healthy hair follicles.
What Causes Hair Loss In Men?
Around the world, over 1 billion men are dealing with hereditary baldness, which is commonly known as male pattern baldness. This condition can lead to decreased confidence and self-esteem.
Male pattern baldness occurs when the hair follicles located at the top and front of the head develop a sensitivity to the hormone DHT. Affected hair will start thinning, recede at the forehead and crown, and eventually stop growing altogether. You can see a common progression of this condition below:
The healthy hair on the back and sides of the head are resistant to DHT. All modern hair restoration procedures will use grafts of these resistant hair follicles to restore your full head of hair.
How Does ARTAS™ Compare to Other Hair Restoration Options?
Circular Grafts (Hair Plugs)
Circular grafts were the only hair transplant option available until the 1980s. In this procedure, large, circular grafts of hair (with up to 30 hairs per graft) were transplanted onto the thinning area. This surgery left a checkerboard of scars across the back of the head, and the large, spaced-out grafts created an unnatural appearance that resembled a doll’s hair.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
During FUT, commonly known as strip surgery, the physician removes a wide strip from the back of the scalp — leaving a long, permanent scar. The physician will then select grafts from this section of scalp to transplant into thinning areas.
Unfortunately, this invasive surgery is very painful and requires weeks of recovery time. It may also cause side-effects such as numbness and tightness in the scalp. In the video below, we give a short explanation of how strip surgery compares to ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration.
Manual Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In traditional FUE, a physician uses a hand-held tool to punch out healthy hair grafts. This technique causes minimal scarring, but it is highly demanding of the physician, who is attempting to hit a minuscule target again and again over an hours-long procedure. If they misjudge even slightly, they risk damaging the hair follicle.
ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration System
ARTAS™ is an advanced form of FUE hair transplant available in Pennsylvania that uses artificial intelligence algorithms to select prime follicular units and transplant them with incredible precision. This robotic hair restoration technology provides natural-looking results without the adverse side effects of FUT or manual FUE. The preparation, procedure, and recovery are practically stress-free for patients…..
What Should You Expect When You Pursue ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration in Pennsylvania?
The following infographic divides the ARTAS™ hair restoration procedure into three simple parts. Below, you can also find a more in-depth description.
The Consultation
If you come in for a free consultation and your physician determines that you are a good fit for ARTAS™, they will create a 3D model of your personalized hair restoration solution with ARTAS Hair Studio™ technology.
This program uses a photo of the top of your head to simulate different hairlines that you can achieve with the ARTAS™ procedure. The hairline that you select will later be uploaded into the ARTAS™ system to guide its advanced AI.
During the consultation, you will also receive a few simple instructions from your physician that will ensure that your hair restoration goes smoothly. Your most important task is to shorten your hair to 1 mm in length for the day of your procedure. This length allows the ARTAS™ system to choose the best possible hairs for transplant.
Often, patients choose to receive a “transitional” haircut a few weeks prior to their procedure so that the change will be less noticeable to their friends, family, and coworkers.
The Procedure
During this virtually painless procedure, you will sit in a chair where you are free to read, watch movies, or just relax. Local anesthetic will be applied to numb your scalp.
The physician-assisted ARTAS™ Robotic System will use cutting-edge algorithms to select the best follicles for harvest while preserving the natural appearance of your healthy hair. It will then transplant hair to thinning areas based on the design your physician created.
Groundbreaking ARTAS™ technology can:
- Analyze, monitor, and track each hair 60 times per second
- Rapidly target hairs at the micron level
- Calculate the exact depth and angle of each follicle
- Perform up to 1,000 grafts per hour
- Provide consistent graft quality
- Preserve healthy hair in “donor” areas
The Results
ARTAS™ requires no stitches or staples, so you will experience little discomfort post-procedure. In a few days, you will be ready to continue regular activities such as exercise.
In the months following the procedure, healthy and permanent hair will begin to grow in areas that were once thinning. Most patients notice significant results after six months and final results after one year.
Still Not Convinced?
We always recommend that our patients talk to those who have undergone the procedure that they’re considering. This conversation offers a personal perspective that most physicians just can’t provide. In ARTAS™’s patient experience video, you can hear from real patients who have benefitted from this revolutionary technology.
