Rhinoplasty for Men – Nose shaping in Pittsburgh
In most cases, men want to greet the world with their best face on, professionally and personally. A dissatisfying nose can be an unwanted focal point of an otherwise handsome face. In addition, men sometimes suffer from breathing problems due to the misshapen internal structure of their nose. These concerns can weigh on men for years before they decide to take action. Rhinoplasty, or nose shaping, can refine specific nasal features to emphasize or improve the appearance or function of the nose. Dr. Brian V. Heil understands this discomfort or embarrassment. Rhinoplasty at Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology in Pittsburgh can aid in giving you the facial harmony you desire.
WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
Rhinoplasty, or nose shaping, is one of the top three most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedures. Rhinoplasty surgery changes the shape of the nose for appearance, function, or both. The nose is made up of bone in the upper part, cartilage in the lower part, and skin. Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can change any part of the nose or all three, depending on the patient’s individual facial structure and personal goals. Nose shaping surgery may meet a patient’s goal by changing the size or shape of the nose giving the patient a more balanced nasal and facial appearance. In addition, the patient may desire a more harmonious profile and ask that humps or depressions on the bridge of the nose be smoothed. Alternately, a patient’s nasal structure may inhibit breathing; in that case, rhinoplasty would be performed to adjust the nasal structure of the patient to allow better airflow and efficient breathing. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE?
Rhinoplasty surgery at Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology is performed by our board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil in our fully accredited surgery center in western Pennsylvania. The procedure can take up to two hours to complete. Patients are comfortably put under deep sedation or administered light anesthesia for the surgery.
Each rhinoplasty is as unique as each patient. Our Pittsburgh surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil customizes each surgery to the specific anatomy and goals of the patient. Serious consideration is given to the patient’s facial dimensions and nose structure as they align with the patient’s expectations (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic). The type of procedure used in the rhinoplasty is dependant on the needs of the patient. An open rhinoplasty procedure is commonly used for complex surgeries, such as a difficult tip surgery or revision procedure. Using the open method, our board certified surgeon accesses and adjusts bone and cartilage through a small incision at the base of the nose between the patient’s nostrils. Alternately, when the nose shaping requires a simple procedure, as in a simple tip adjustment or simple dorsal procedure, the closed rhinoplasty method is used. In the closed method, the nasal structure is accessed from inside the nose. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic)
After the rhinoplasty procedure, a splint is placed on the outside of the nose to maintain the new position and alignment, as well as to limit swelling and bruising. Some patients will have internal packing within the nose. During the healing process, the patient needs to rest with his head raised higher than his chest to reduce any swelling and bleeding. The patient may notice some congestion due to swelling or the splints that were placed inside the nose during surgery. After approximately one week, internal dressings are removed. Throughout the healing process, the patient may notice some temporary swelling and bruising with discoloration around the eyelids lasting for a few more weeks. Patients will be released to participate in light activity first, and then to heavier, full contact activity after about six weeks from the date of the rhinoplasty procedure. In time, the nose will heal to its final result. Results are very slight changes with alterations measured in mm. However, these slight changes make a large difference in overall appearance. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic)
WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH RHINOPLASTY?
The benefits of nose shaping can last a lifetime. But like any surgery, rhinoplasty carries risks such as an adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, and infection, among others (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic). However, a private discussion with our board-certified Pittsburgh cosmetic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil will leave you fully informed of the benefits and risks involved with the rhinoplasty procedure as they apply to you.
