FAQ: ARTAS™ Robotic Hair Restoration
Dr. Brian Heil of Premier Plastic Surgery is the first plastic surgeon to offer state-of-the-art ARTAS™ hair loss treatment near Cranberry Township and the Pittsburgh area. This minimally-invasive hair restoration procedure provides natural-looking, permanent results.
What is the ARTAS™ High-Definition Stereoscopic Vision System?
ARTAS™ is a physician-assisted robot quickly and efficiently performs the Follicular Unit Extraction hair restoration procedure. Its AI analyzes, monitors, and updates each follicular unit 60 times per second — more than 5 times faster than human vision. It determines the angles, thickness, and hair type of each patient, and it won’t damage your healthy hair.
Is ARTAS™ the Right Choice for Me? Hereditary male pattern baldness causes more than 95% of hair loss in men. People with this condition lose hair at the top and front of their head because these hairs become sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Healthy hair follicles on the back and sides of the head are DHT-resistant. If you are losing hair in this pattern, then ARTAS™ may be the right choice for you.
How Does ARTAS™ Work?
The procedure lasts four to eight hours. You will be seated comfortably and will receive a local anesthetic. During surgery, ARTAS™ uses digital imaging to select the strongest hair for harvesting. It will transplant healthy hair grafts from the back and sides of the head (i.e., your donor area) to balding areas with robotic precision. These grafts develop their own blood supply at their implantation site, so your natural hair will grow in to form a full, healthy head of hair.
Do I Need a Haircut Before My Procedure?
The day of your procedure, your hair should be 1 mm in length. This allows the ARTAS™ system to determine the best placement for each follicular unit.
How Long Will My Recovery Take?
You can return home immediately after this minimally-invasive surgery, which involves no stitches and no staples. Most patients report little discomfort and soon return to their daily activities.
When Will I Start Noticing Results?
Three months after the procedure, you will start to notice new hairs. After approximately six months, you will enjoy a much fuller head of hair. You will see the treatment’s final results after a full year.
Will People Know I Got Hair Transplant Surgery?
ARTAS™ will not overharvest your hair, as older surgical methods did. Your donor areas will be indistinguishable from your normal hair in 7 to 10 days. Your final head of hair after ARTAS™ hair transplantation surgery will also look completely natural, unlike hair “plugs.” Additionally, scarring is minimal, so you can confidently wear your hair in any style or length.
