FUT and FUE: Two Common Methods for Harvesting Healthy Hair Follicles
Ultimately, the goal of a hair transplant is to harvest healthy hair follicles from the back of the head (the “donor area”) and move them to “recipient sites” in the scalp’s thinning areas.
In Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), this is done by removing a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head, closing the area with sutures, and extracting hair follicles from that strip. FUT leaves a long, linear scar that is hidden by longer hairstyles.
In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), on the other hand, the physician extracts individual hair follicles one-by-one from the back of the head. This method does not leave a linear scar, but the patient’s hair must be trimmed short prior to the procedure.
