Best Procedures For 50’s: Forehead Lift Brow Lift
Eyebrows convey a lot of emotion in our facial expressions. The positioning and motion of our eyebrows project certain feelings to others. As we age, the position of our eyebrows sinks lower, horizontal wrinkles develop across the forehead, and vertical creases appear between the eyebrows. If, at rest, your eyebrows and surrounding skin make you look stressed, angry or worried, instead of relaxed, Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology can help. Our Pittsburgh plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil performs a forehead lift, or brow lift, that smooths the skin around your brows and forehead to restore a calm, rejuvenated appearance as your neutral expression.
WHAT IS A FOREHEAD LIFT?
A forehead lift, also known as a brow lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that repositions the skin of the upper third of the face. Underlying muscles are tightened and the remaining skin repositioned to restore tautness. This reduces horizontal wrinkles across the forehead, smooths the vertical frown lines between the brows, and tightens the brows and skin around the eyes. The forehead lift focuses on the upper part of the face and can be performed as an adjunct to other procedures, such as a facelift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A FOREHEAD LIFT?
A forehead lift tightens the skin of the forehead and lifts the eyebrows, leaving the upper facial features looking rejuvenated and conveying alertness. The surgery will diminish the wrinkles across the forehead and the creases between the eyes. The neutral expression (your face at rest) will appear less stressed. A forehead lift can be used in combination with other surgeries to enhance their results. (American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Mayo Clinic, U.S. Library of Medicine)
HOW IS A FOREHEAD LIFT PERFORMED?
To begin this outpatient procedure, patients are given anesthesia so they will be comfortable during the forehead lift. The actual surgical method of a forehead lift can vary. One method is an endoscope incision where an endoscope is inserted into small incisions in the hairline. This method allows the source of creases and wrinkles beneath the skin to be adjusted. Another method is a coronal incision, in which the incision is made across the top of the head within the hair running from ear to ear. The skin is lifted and any muscle adjusted. The scar from the procedure is hidden within the patient’s hair. The third method is a hairline brow lift which benefits those with high foreheads. The incision is made at the front edge of the hairline so that the skin of the forehead and eyebrows can be lifted, adjusted and replaced without affecting the patient’s natural hairline. The scar left from this method is more visible but can be concealed with bangs. After the chosen procedure is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures or medical adhesives. Any swelling and bruising will subside in time to reveal smoother forehead skin and a younger appearance. WHY IS A FOREHEAD LIFT IDEAL FOR 50 YEAR OLDS?
The upper part of the face is typically more resistant to showing the signs of aging than the rest of the face, but it is not immune. The creases, lines, and wrinkles that develop above and between the eyebrows typically are not significant until the decade of the 50’s. Therefore, a forehead lift is ideal for men and women in this stage of life. Significant signs of aging require the serious intervention of surgery to rejuvenate the appearance. For those who may want a facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) while in their 50’s, a forehead lift complements those procedures cohesively.
