BEST PROCEDURES FOR 50’S: FACELIFT
In a culture energized by youthfulness, visible signs of aging can damage your public image and self-confidence. As the signs of aging set in, those who were once noticed for their attractive features may feel diminished. Our Pittsburgh plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil can assist you with a boost to your confidence and allure through a facelift. This procedure can turn back the hands of time, revealing the features of your face that gave you confidence in your younger years as you faced the world.
WHAT IS A FACELIFT?
Facelift, medically known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the face and lifts the sagging skin of the neck. The soft tissues are sculpted so that they conform to the underlying facial structure. Under the influences of gravity, stress, and heredity, facial skin develops wrinkles, lines, and folds. A facelift surgically restores the natural contours of the face. It does not change the qualities of the skin itself. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons,Mayo Clinic)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A FACELIFT?
When we are young, the fat in our face is evenly distributed and our skin is taut and smooth. As we age, the fat loses volume, clumps up, and shifts downward causing skin to sag and droop. Facial features that used to look lively and youthful appear withdrawn and aged. Our Pittsburgh surgeon performs a facelift procedure that can allow you to age gracefully. Facelifts are not for superficial skin corrections or wrinkles. They are a more intense procedure than what would be necessary refresh texture and tone. HOW IS A FACELIFT PERFORMED?
At Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, cosmetic surgical procedures are performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil in our state of the art surgery center as outpatient procedures. Patients are administered anesthesia to eliminate any discomfort during the facelift. The specific goals of the patient will determine the type of facelift the patient will undergo.
The traditional facelift begins with an incision along the hairline near the temples that travels down around the ears ending at the lower scalp. Through this incision, facial or neck fat is redistributed or sculpted and the underlying muscles and facial tissue are lifted. The skin is stretched over the new contours of the face trimming away any excess skin. In some cases, a second incision may be made under the chin to correct any concerns with the neck.
Another method of facelift, referred to as limited incision, uses much shorter incisions around the edges of the face. Small incisions are made at the temples, around the ear, and on the inside of the lower eyelids or upper lip, if necessary. Areas of the face are reached through these incisions and lifted.
A neck lift may be performed to correct any loose skin and fat accumulation under the chin along the neckline. This incision is made at the front of the ear lobe wrapping around the ear and ending at the lower scalp.
After the desired amount of tissue is repositioned or lifted, the incisions are sutured and the patient is moved to a recovery area for an appropriate period of time. Over the following 4-6 weeks most swelling or bruising will subside. The incision lines will be concealed within the patient’s natural hairline and contours of the ear and face. The results will be tighter facial skin, a more youthful appearance, and better self-image. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic)
WHY IS FACELIFT IDEAL FOR 50 YEAR OLDS?
Non-surgical dermatological treatments may be ineffective at this point in life because the soft tissues which cushion the face have repositioned. The remaining excess skin and deepened wrinkles can not be corrected by injections of dermal fillers. Facelifts provide more permanent results that cannot be achieved with a regular dermatological regimen. Facelifts surgically manipulate the underlying tissues and skin of the face and neck, tightening the skin and removing any excess. Patients are left looking rejuvenated with the attractive features of their youth revealed once again. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Harvard Health Publications, Women Over 50)
