Best Procedures For 50’s: Eyelid Surgery Blepharoplasty
No matter how well people prepare their skin for aging, there is no fountain of youth. The inevitable will eventually occur: facial lines, sunken eyes, wrinkles and sagging skin. The resulting effects on appearance can be distracting or even distressing, especially around the eyes. People do not have to live with looking tired or depressed due to drooping facial skin, especially when they have achieved the confidence to invest in their appearance. Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology offers an eyelid surgery to remove sagging skin from around the eyes and provide a more youthful gaze.
WHAT IS EYELID SURGERY?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the eyes by tightening muscles, removing excess skin and repositioning or removing fat in the eyelids. Because aging weakens the muscles that support the skin around the eyes, lower eyelids become baggy and upper eyelids droop. Excessive loose skin may cause loss of peripheral vision by obscuring part of the field of vision. Eyelid surgery to correct these issues can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or on both eyelids, depending on the patient’s situation. (American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic)
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EYELID SURGERY?
For patients that once looked aged with droopy eyes and excessive wrinkles, eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, smooths the skin surrounding the eyes. The patient appears more alert and rejuvenated with an improved self-image. Patients who were experiencing impaired peripheral vision from excess skin lying over the eyes, have clearer vision. The excess skin is removed, bags are smoothed, and the eye area gains a more youthful and alert appearance. Once swelling subsides and the incisions heal, the benefits of eyelid surgery are long-lasting. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic, U.S. National Library of Medicine)
HOW IS EYELID SURGERY PERFORMED?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed in our Pittsburgh surgical center as an outpatient procedure by our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil. First, anesthesia is administered for the comfort of the patient. If upper and lower eyelids are being corrected, the upper eyelid will be addressed first. An incision is made along the natural fold of the eye through which excess skin is removed, muscle is tightened, and fat deposits are either removed or repositioned. The incision is closed, and then if necessary, the bottom eyelid is addressed. The incision is made either inside the eyelid or just underneath the lower eyelashes. Through incisions inside the eyelid, fat deposits can be removed or repositioned. However, if excess skin is to be removed, an incision is made just under the lower eyelashes. This strategy allows for excess skin to be removed as well as fat redistributed or removed. After the procedure, the patient is moved to a recovery room and monitored for any immediate concerns. Once cleared, the patient returns home to complete recovery. (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic)
WHY IS EYELID SURGERY IDEAL FOR 50 YEAR OLDS?
A dramatic loss of collagen and muscle tone with consequent looseness of the facial skin is typical as people age into their 50’s. Those in this stage of life may appear older than they are chronologically or may appear depressed based on their aging facial features. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is ideal for people wanting to resist what is typical and choose to look as young as they feel. During the procedure, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil will smooth bags below the eye and remove excess skin or redistribute any fat above the eye. The result is tighter skin around the eyes and a more energetic appearance. Just because people grow older each year, their appearance need not reveal it.
