Eyelid Surgery Recovery Tips
You’ve decided to have eyelid surgery, and now you’re wondering what the recovery will be like. The procedure itself is simple and highly effective, creating a refreshed, lifted and more youthful appearance. But what should you expect once the procedure is over?
Expectations after eyelid surgery
Once you’ve had your eyelid surgery, there will be a recovery period as your eyelids heal. Be sure to have someone available to drive you home and assist you as needed the first night after your surgery. You may experience some sensitivity to light, watery eyes, moderate pain, swelling or bruising.
You can return back to work once you’re comfortable, usually in about 5-10 days. It will take 2-3 weeks to get through the initial swelling and bruising, and 1-2 months for the residual swelling to fade.
Here are some great tips to help you move quickly and successfully through your recovery period.
Tips for eyelid surgery recovery
You can use these tips to help improve your recovery time and ensure that you heal well and properly.
1. Let yourself rest
Give yourself plenty of time to rest and relax while you heal. Ensure you arrange to take time off from work, school, or daily activities. Get enough sleep, which gives your body a chance to heal.
Stock your fridge well and meal plan ahead of time so that you don’t have to shop or prepare food during the first few days.
2. Be gentle with your eyes
Apply ice packs to your eyes, especially during the first three days.
Use your prescribed eye drops or ointments.
Don’t rub your eyes.
Don’t wear contact lenses for about two weeks.
For the first few days, sleep with your head raised above your chest.
3. Protect your eyes
Stay out of the sun, wind or other harsh elements during your recovery. Wear dark sunglasses when you’re outside.
Don’t strain or dry out your eyes, which includes limited reading, TV or screen time for a week.
4. Avoid vigorous activity
Don’t exercise or do too much activity for the first few weeks. Anything strenuous, such as heavy lifting, gym time or sports, can increase blood flow to your eyes, which can cause bleeding when you’re still recovering.
