Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, can modify the entire mid-face area around the eyes, as well as upper or lower eyelids. It’s most often applied to women, who in 2014 made up 85 percent of such operations in the United States. In addition to achieving aesthetic goals, it’s also used therapeutically to correct defects, deformities, and injuries to the eyelid. In many cases, this can help to improve vision in one or both eyes.
Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology accepts physically healthy individuals who feel their face appears tired or withdrawn due to sagging skin or excess fatty tissue around the eyes. This is especially frustrating to those who otherwise feel healthy, active, and vibrant because their face conveys the opposite image. It’s also desirable for public speakers or anyone regularly addressing large groups to help maintain an engaging public image.
During a blepharoplasty procedure, skin is removed from beneath the eyelid, which creates a smoothing of the overall eyelid region. This surgery may also include an endoscopic brow lift and facelift. The entire operation typically takes about an hour and can be performed comfortably on the patient using local anesthesia. Some, however, prefer complete sedation, which can be done safely using intravenous anesthetics. Either way, it takes about one week of downtime to recover from cosmetic eyelid surgery as minor bruising, swelling, or slight incision discomfort may result. Depending on individual conditions, the surgeon, alongside the patient, will determine the specific method of cosmetic eyelid surgery.
The long-lasting results of cosmetic eyelid surgery will appear within several weeks. Incision lines may take longer to refine. Remember that while eyelid surgery can correct certain conditions permanently, your face continues to age naturally. You’ll also be advised to protect your face from ongoing direct sunlight to help maintain results.
As swelling and bruising subside, a smoother, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region will emerge. This results in a more alert, rejuvenated appearance. Individual results may vary, and additional procedures may be necessary to achieve optimal results in some cases.
