At Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we offer a range of quality breast procedures. Pittsburgh surgeons help women who have experienced a change in their breasts due to variables including pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuation in weight, aging, heredity, and gravity. The demand for breast lifts has grown by 70 percent since 2000, outpacing even the popular breast implant procedure.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure performed to raise the breasts, removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the contour of the breast. Sometimes, the areola of a breast becomes enlarged for various reasons, and a breast lift procedure will reduce this enlargement as well. Along with that, the breast lift helps to rejuvenate the woman’s figure with a more youthful and uplifted breast profile, helping to also rejuvenate confidence.
A breast lift allows a woman to regain more youthful appearing breasts by making them higher and firmer, offering a complete breast enhancement. Our surgeons achieve beautiful results by moving the nipple position, as the nipple can turn downward over time and tighten the skin. The breast lift procedure will not, however, significantly change the size of the breasts or round out the upper portion of the breast. If these are your goals, consider pairing a breast lift with breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.
Women who benefit most from breast lift procedures include those who are looking to restore a better breast shape post-pregnancy and after they’ve finished breastfeeding. Those who wish to improve their breast contour after weight loss, as well as those who are looking to enjoy a beautiful, perky breast shape, are all qualified candidates for a successful, satisfactory breast lift.
A breast lift can help restore the proportionate, youthful shape of breasts with the removal of excess skin. This is especially true with regards to the fact that losing weight often equates to losing breast volume. Along with that, post-pregnancy breasts are often stretched and sagging in appearance. A breast lift procedure, with or without implants, can help to restore your aesthetically pleasing breasts.
Help yourself confirm whether you wish to undergo a breast lift procedure by asking yourself a few simple questions, one of which is whether or not your nipples appear to point downward. The breast lift will reposition the breast tissue so that your nipples face forward. Another thought to ponder is whether your nipple and areola sit below the crease underneath the breast. Along with that, are you happy with your breast size when wearing a bra? Are your breasts asymmetrical or unusually shaped? The breast lift procedure is effective in improving symmetry of breasts, and a skilled surgeon can use specific breast lift techniques to restore a more normal, rounded shape to your breasts.
In some cases, women with large-sized breasts will experience the effects of gravity even more than smaller-chested women because of the additional weight. Surgeons who specialize in breast augmentation will help each individual woman decide whether the combination of a breast reduction and a breast lift will be right for them. In other cases, women desire a breast lift because their breasts are not symmetrical. When the breasts are not the same size, women can choose to receive breast implants in addition to a breast lift, as this will help even out the sizes for a full breast augmentation.
Surgeons advise their patients that after the breast lift surgery, patients should expect bruising, swelling, and some discomfort, but this will all subside with time to reveal a more natural, firmer, and more youthful pair of breasts. In addition to an uplifted appearance, the patient will also enjoy better-positioned areolas and nipples.
The breast lift surgery is performed with one or a combination of various incision techniques based on the patient’s existing tissue, the amount of skin to be removed, and the personal goals established. The goal is to use the technique that will achieve optimal results with the least amount of scarring possible.
Cosmetic surgeons may opt for the crescent lift technique, which results in minimal scarring and is usually best for correction of minimal sagging. The crescent lift technique involves a small incision that runs halfway around the top half of the edge of the areola. It is less frequently used in breast lift procedures; however, it is more common when a patient is having a breast augmentation with a breast lift.
The peri-areolar or donut lift is generally chosen for mild sagging with a single scar. The vertical or lollipop lift is most commonly used to correct moderate sagging, as it also provides more extensive reshaping than alternate techniques. Lastly, the inverted T or anchor lift is best used for a dramatic reshaping in order to correct extensive sagging.
Breast lift surgery is generally an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The procedure only takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. Shortly after the surgery, patients can go home and continue recovery. The breasts will be bandaged or placed in a surgical bra. Soreness and swelling should be anticipated after the surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to help with comfortability. Many patients return to work within the first week following breast lift surgery.
