FAQ: Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Augmentation Mastopexy

Published on December 6, 2017 by

When it comes to confusing plastic surgery terms, nicknames, and frequently used names, it can be hard to tell what is a new or different procedure and what is the same. A good example is the tummy tuck, otherwise known as abdominoplasty. Commonly, isn’t it easier to just say tummy tuck? It clearly states what it is, doesn’t sound scary, and is way easier to say. Still, the term abdominoplasty is often interchanged. But what about the terms breast augmentation and breast augmentation mastopexy?

What is the Difference Between Breast Augmentation and Breast Augmentation Mastopexy?

Upon encountering them, these two procedures may almost seem like the abbreviated and unabbreviated versions, but this is not the case. The “mastopexy” actually stands for the “lift” portion of the procedure. In which case, determines that each procedure undertakes different issues with the breast.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy

This procedure is performed for the purpose of improving both shape and volume, addressing:

  • Breast ptosis or breast sagging
  • Deflation atrophy
  • Asymmetry

These problem areas can come about due to any number of things, such as breastfeeding, weight loss, or even aging. All of them can be resolved with breast augmentation mastopexy.

Augmentation vs. Mastopexy

Augmentation is the placement of an implant in order to fill out the volume of a breast and increase the size. However, implants are unable to correct a droop or sag of the breasts, which is taken care of by mastopexy. Mastopexy tightens the skin and repositions the breast tissue and nipple for a perfect and proportional shape.
