The choice to undergo cosmetic surgery is a personal decision. The anticipation of the beautiful results from cosmetic procedures is motivating, but not being fully aware of the process and what to expect afterwards can cause unease. Our professionals at Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology<\/a> focus on patient education to ensure our patients are fully informed about all of the aspects of their cosmetic surgery prior to undergoing the procedure. Full understanding means less stress, which is good for everyone.<\/p>\n

Cosmetic surgical procedures may not be as severe or lengthy as certain medical surgeries, but they are still a form of surgery and should be elected with a full understanding of the process and with caution. Like any other surgical procedure, patients begin the process by receiving anesthesia. At Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology<\/a>, most cosmetic surgical procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. After the procedure is complete, patients are moved to a recovery room where they are monitored while the anesthesia wears off and until the patient is able to walk and drink liquids.<\/p>\n

When ready, patients are allowed to return to the comfort of home on the same day. Patients will not be allowed to drive themselves home, so they should arrange for transportation. While at home, it is imperative that patients follow our plastic surgeon Dr. Brian V. Heil\u2019s<\/a> after care instructions. Some patients may need assistance at home for a day or two while healing. Depending on the procedure, patients will have gauze and bandages wrapped around their incisions. Those that undergo breast or facelift surgery may have drainage tubes inserted to remove any excess fluids. Patients should use care with their incisions and avoid rubbing them. On the first day home, patients should plan to rest as much as possible. Incision areas may appear red, and patients may notice bruising and swelling, all of which are normal. Patients may experience numbness in areas that were operated on. For example, nipples may be numb for a period of time for patients that underwent breast surgery, or eyelids may feel numb for patients that had eyelid surgery. Cold compresses along with prescribed or over the counter pain management medication can be used to alleviate discomfort. Patients should avoid smoking (because nicotine decreases the nutritional blood flow to the skin), heavy lifting, and strenuous activity. If patients should notice any shortness of breath, chest pain, unusual heart rate, or bleeding from the incisions, they should seek additional medical care immediately.
