There are two types of UV rays. Ultraviolet A rays, or UVA rays, can penetrate through windows, clothing, and deep into skin. These rays lead to premature aging, and you are more likely to develop wrinkles and age spots with prolonged exposure. Ultraviolet B rays, or UVB rays, are the primary cause of sunburns. While UVB rays are harmful, they can be blocked by glass and clothing. In addition to uncomfortable burns and signs of aging, these two rays can also cause skin cancer.<\/p>\n
Our dermatology professionals offer a few important words of advice. As noted by the American Society of Dermatology, there is no safe way to tan. Any sun exposure leads to damage. While many people become concerned about sun exposure in the summertime, dermatologists advise that you wear broad-spectrum, waterproof SPF 30 throughout the year, making sure that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It is also important to reapply every 2-3 hours, if you are active outdoors. This will help keep your skin healthy and your appearance youthful.<\/p>\n
The American Society of Dermatology also suggests wearing protective clothing and accessories to protect sensitive areas. When you buy sunglasses, make sure they protect against ultraviolet rays. This will not only protect your eyes, but also the delicate skin around them. For additional protection of the face, neck, and chest, wear a wide brimmed hat. Summer cover-ups and umbrellas can also add an additional layer of protection from the sun.<\/p>\n
