But aside from the beautiful results and a new, curving, feminine physique, there are some key points to think with for those who are considering getting breast augmentation. Here are some important things to know.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Take your time in finding the right surgeon for you.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Finding the right plastic surgeon is vital, as your experience and results will depend on the skill, expertise, understanding and care that your surgeon provides. Choose an experienced surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). ABPS selects surgeons for board certification who have a certain amount of experience and results, and who have passed their rigorous exam that demonstrates the highest standards of knowledge, quality and ethics.<\/p>\n

Aside from the research you\u2019ll be doing online, an in-person consultation can make all the difference. This is your chance to talk about the surgical plan, implant placement (over or under the muscle), location of inciscions, possible additional procedures, risks, concerns, and any other questions that might arise. Your surgeon will want to know your expectations for the surgery and will prepare you for the recovery process and results.<\/p>\n

One of the most important parts of your time with your surgeon before the surgery is getting their advice in selecting the right type and size of implants for your physical frame and aesthetic preferences.<\/p>\n

3. Take time to explore all of your implant options before you make your choice<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Implants come in different shapes, sizes, textures, profiles, and types. The first choice you\u2019ll make is whether you want silicone or saline implants. Each type of implant has its own benefits and drawbacks. Silicone implants tend to look and feel more natural, while saline implants cause less scarring and are filled with harmless saline\u2013generally considered the safer choice in the case of a possible rupture.<\/p>\n

Your surgeon will let you try out different implant types, profiles and shapes with a sizer. A sizer is a neoprene, bead-filled sac. They are inserted into your bra to give you the best possible idea of what your breasts will look like.<\/p>\n

4. Preparing for your surgery makes a difference<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Getting ready for surgery starts about a month ahead of time. If you smoke, quit four weeks before the procedure. Smoking causes poor blood circulation and healing problems, so it\u2019s vital that you don\u2019t smoke both before and after your procedure. Two weeks before the procedure, stop taking any blood-thinning medication, vitamins, or herbal supplements. These increase the risk of bleeding.<\/p>\n

Stock your fridge with plenty of healthy foods and snacks that are already mostly prepared. This gives you nourishing food options that don\u2019t require much work during your recovery period.<\/p>\n

Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure. If you have kids, you\u2019ll want someone to be able to help take care of them as you won\u2019t be able to lift them or exert yourself.<\/p>\n

5. Your recovery will take 2-3 weeks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Your recovery period will include swelling and bruising, which will begin to fade in the second week. Pain and soreness can be managed well with pain medication. For two weeks, you will not be able to exercise, lean over, or lift anything over five pounds.<\/p>\n

After about two weeks, most patients will be able to return to light work and gentle activity. It will take 4-6 weeks before you can exercise again or continue with strenuous activities.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that it will take time for your implants to settle in place in your chest. This settling time may take a period of months.<\/p>\n

6. Not everyone is a candidate for augmentation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While many women are candidates for breast implants, there are general qualifying points that must be met to ensure the surgery is successful. Smoking, obesity, poor health, and other factors can rule breast augmentation out as a safe option. Cover your medical history and lifestyle habits with your surgeon, and be sure to answer any questions fully when your surgeon asks.<\/p>\n

Like any surgery, breast augmentation has some risks, including bleeding, swelling, non-optimum results, infection, and others.
