Psoriasis is a chronic and often painful dermatological skin disease in which skin cells reproduce much faster than normal. This non-contagious skin condition causes round, reddish skin patches with silvery scales to develop on the scalp, knees, elbows, hands and feet. A normal skin cell matures and falls off the body’s surface in 28 to 30 days. But a psoriatic skin cell takes only three to four days to mature and move to the surface. Instead of falling off, the cells pile up and form the lesions.
Treatment options include topical or oral medications and biologic agents that work by blocking the activation of the cells that trigger the development of psoriasis. Premier Plastic Surgery & Dermatology also offers XTRAC Laser Treatment which is an FDA-approved excimer laser procedure used to treat active skin lesions associated with psoriasis as well as vitiligo. The XTRAC laser is designed to effectively reduce the appearance of psoriasis and vitiligo in ten treatments or less, with results typically lasting several months before any symptoms present themselves again.
