Excessive Sweating For Men Pittsburgh

Excessive or heavy sweating, called hyperhidrosis, is rarely a serious medical problem, but for men who suffer from this condition, it can be devastating. Excessive sweating affects every moment of every day. And all too often, suffering from hyperhidrosis is a silent struggle – avoiding social situations and trying to disguise the excessive sweating with clothing, powders, and pads. Antiperspirants can be helpful but for some men, their effectiveness is limited.

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating that is inadequately managed with topical agents. BOTOX helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. BOTOX injections can be administered in our office, and the procedure requires as little as 10-15 minutes to complete. Our providers do not demand any restrictions in work or leisure activity (aside from refraining from intensive exercise or the use of a sauna on the day of the injections).

The procedure is relatively straightforward. During the procedure, a very fine needle is used to inject tiny amounts of BOTOX just under the skin intermittently throughout the area of excessive sweating (in a grid pattern, approximately every 1 to 2 centimeters.) Underarm injections are typically near pain-free. Multiple injections are given based on your provider’s assessment of the area that needs to be treated. To ease any potential discomfort for the patient, our providers may use a topical anesthetic. Possible side effects include temporary bruising and swelling at the injections site. BOTOX is also used to stop sweating in the hands, face, and feet, as well, but side effects like muscle weakness and dropping eyelids have been reported.

After you receive BOTOX injections for any focal area, our providers will recommended that you follow-up with our office in 1 to 2 weeks. This follow-up is highly useful because it enables your provider to ‘touch-up’ any sweating areas that may have been missed during the first round of injections and ensure that you are getting the treatment’s full benefit.

The cost of BOTOX treatments for hyperhidrosis will vary depending upon the size of the body area you need treated. Some insurance carriers may reimburse for treatment, but it is best to call your specific plan to learn about eligibility. A general estimate of the cost for two underarms is about $1,000. It will take an estimated 7-10 days for most patients to see the effects. Patients can expect results to last up to 201 days, or 6.7 months. Individual results may vary. However, BOTOX injections do not cure hyperhidrosis; repeated injections may be necessary to maintain the effect.
